A Handful of Dust

We see the detritus of an abandoned camp in South America and a main character’s hallucination. Then, the story beings. Tony and Brenda Last, lord and lady, live on his enormous estate with their young son. Tony’s not much for parties, and Brenda joins London society, on the arm of a penniless man, John Beaver, a hanger-on at Tony’s club. John is encouraged by his entrepreneurial mother, who sees a quid in Tony and Brenda. Brenda and John become lovers, Brenda spends more and more time in London, and Tony’s without a clue. Then, bringing things to a head are tragedy, law suits, greed, and what should be a few-months’ expedition to Brazil. We are each of us merely a handful of dust.

Lenin: The Train

March/April 1917. the first world war is already a couple year old. A sealed train with Russian emigrants keeps on driving from Zurich through Germany and Sweden to Saint-Petersburg. The bolsheviks on the train are lead by Vladimir J. Lenin (Kingsley). There are some unpleasant collisions taking place between enthusiastic Socialists and workers concerned about the war. During the train travel time Lenin’s affair with the gracious Inessa comes to an end, and his Nadja is prepared to take him back. The triumphant arrival in Saint-Petersburg exceeds all expectations.

The Great Outdoors

Chicago resident Chester “Chet” Ripley, his wife Connie, and their two sons Buck and Benny are on vacation at a lake resort in Pechoggin, Wisconsin. Then the unexpected happens — Connie’s sister Kate, Kate’s know-it-all investment broker husband Roman Craig, and Kate and Roman’s twin daughters Mara and Cara crash the vacation, having decided to blow off their own plans to vacation in Europe. Roman proceeds to majorly get on Chet’s nerves — so much that Chet is ready and willing to pack up and go home, even as teenager Buck tries to romance local girl Cammie. It turns out that the reason why Roman, Kate, and the twins crashed the vacation is because the Craigs are broke because of a bad investment, and Roman was planning to hit Chet up for $25,000.
