| An unknown and lethal virus ruined five thousand million persons in 1996. Only 1 % population survived in year 2035 and is forced to live the underground. A prisoner (James Cole) gives to be returned with reluctance on time in 1996 to pick information on the origin of the epidemic (which they say to him was spread by a "mysterious Army of Twelve Monkeys") and locate the virus before he transfers so that the scientists could study him.
