The first half-hour or so concerns the investigation by FBI Agent Chet Desmond into the murder of waitress Teresa Banks. The film then cuts to one year later and follows the events during one week in the life of Laura Palmer, a story which was later to motivate much of the series. | In the year 2013 the civilization has been destroyed almost. After a war that there decimated the government and most of the population of the United States (possibly the world) the people strain for surviving against famine and groups of rascal of armed men. They call some group the Holnists. This group is bigger than some another and his leader, General Bethlehem, he has illusions of the mistake the country. A drifter (Costner) is captured by the group and forced to join. He escapes in the first possibility and jeep meets a mail with a skeleton in it. The skeleton takes a postal uniform and the drifter takes it to keep him warm. He also finds a post office big sack and begins to cheat the people with old letters. The hope he sees in the people that he delivers to changes his projects and he they decide that he must help to reduce the Holnists.
En el año 2013 la civilización se ha destruido casi. Después de que una guerra que diezmó el gobierno y la mayor parte de la población de los Estados Unidos (posiblemente el mundo) la gente se esfuerza por sobrevivir contra hambre y grupos de pícaro de hombres armados.
