| Adela Quested, a young Englishwoman, travels to India in the late 1920s to visit her fiance, the British magistrate posted in a small town, her traveling companion is his mother Mrs. Moore. Wishing that some of the country and to meet everyday Indians who are frustrated by the British community has insisted that relations with the locals, experiencing the best at a distance. Finally, a friend introduces them to Mrs. Moore Muslim doctor who is seen briefly on her visit to mosque. He takes them on a trip to nearby caves (local attraction), but what happens there is a danger that destroys all citizens between the British and Indian companies.

| The movie treats with the situation of British war prisoners during the Second world war that they are arranged to construct a bridge to accommodate the railroad of Burma - Siam. His instinct must sabotage the bridge, but, under the control of Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), they are persuaded that the bridge should be constructed like a symbol of British morality, spirit and dignity in adverse circumstances. At first, the prisoners admire Nicholson when he with valor supports the torture, rather that to put in danger his beginning to benefit of the Japanese commander Saito (Sessue Hayakawa). He is an honorable but arrogant man, who is revealed slowly to be a cheated obsessive one. He becomes convinced that the bridge is a monument to the British character, but really it is a monument to him, and his insistence in his construction does to itself a subtle form of the collaboration with the enemy. La película trata con la situación de prisioneros de guerra británicos durante la Segunda guerra mundial que son ordenados construir un puente para acomodar el ferrocarril de Birmania-Siam.
