Albert Pierrepont delivered groceries - and was a hangman. Following his father's footsteps he quickly became known for his efficiency and compassion, rising to become 'the best in the land'. From the early 1933 until the end of his career in 1955 he executed some 608 people including the 'Beasts of Belsen' (war criminals) for which he earned the gratitude of a nation. But by the time he hanged Ruth Ellis, the last women to be executed in Britain, public sentiments had changed....and so had Pierrepont.

A boss of mature crime (MALCOLM MCDOWELL) thinks with an air enough behind from 1999, by telling the brutality which made him triumphant - and feared him. As a young anonymous hood (played by Paul Bettany) in the course of the sixties Swaying London, he seemed to ape his boss mod Freddie Mays (David Thewlis) and to make anything for him. But its narration displays desire very - consommante: of Freddie's supremacy and especially his big bird (the Holes of Saffron). Baby's shark develops his nastiness and backstabbing, by conspiring to be the Gangster Not. 1.
